What is Beartooth Powder University?
The mission of Beartooth Powder University is to create a formal curriculum and venue for backcountry skiing and snowboarding. Through education, BPU will empower students with the skills and knowledge to take their backcountry skiing and snowboarding to the next level, safely and efficiently. By providing a wide range of courses from Level 1 Avalanche Courses to the culmination of our program, The Advanced Ski Mountaineering Course, we strive to give our students the tools to make the right decisions in the mountains and become the best ski partner possible. All of our instructors are passionate about their own personal time in the backcountry and their continued education in the realm of backcountry skiing and avalanche safety. This enthusiasm and knowledge carries forward to our students through the assortment of avalanche classes and skills courses we instruct. All of us are motivated to share our love and enthusiasm for backcountry skiing/snowboarding and Beartooth Powder University is the culmination of all our years and knowledge of safe and efficient travel on snow in the mountains. The overall consensus of anyone knowledgeable and passionate about backcountry skiing and ski mountaineering is that to become a better, safer and more efficient backcounty traveler, time in the mountains is the best way to improve your skills.
The following is the current progression of our courses at Beartooth Powder University
Level 1 Avalanche
- Town Based Course: No Current Offerings
- Woody Creek Cabin $679
- Mt Zimmer Yurt $769
- Duration: 3 days
- Location: Cooke City, Woody Creek Cabin or Mount Zimmer Yurt
- Description: The staple class for every backcountry skier/snowboarder – learn the fundamentals to become a competent backcountry partner.
Level 1 + Powder
The most common comment from students at the end of our Level 1 classes is they wished there was more time for skiing. We listened and we added an additional day to a Level 1 course that is dedicated to just skiing 🙂 During our 4 day Level 1 + Powder Course, we cover all of our standard Level 1 Curriculum and pick the day with the best skiing conditions to just go ski!

- Description: This is for advanced backcountry skiers and riders who want to go deeper into the backcountry and take their knowledge and rescue skills to the next level
Advanced Ski Mountaineering
- Town Based Course $925 (none scheduled for 2023/24)
- Mt Zimmer Yurt $1,200
- Duration: 4 days
- Location: Cooke City
- Description: Hone in on your snow climbing, steep skiing and technical skills used to access those lofty summits and breathtaking lines!
